In the US alone over 550million plastic shampoo bottles are thrown away annually. Every year!

This is not sustainable!

Even when people do the right thing and try to recycle this packaging, they often don’t realise that only 9% of plastic actually gets recycled and that any plastic can only be recycled a maximum of 3 times.

So there’s our first main reason to stop buying these products!

But the problem doesn’t end with packaging…

The now far too common overuse of synthetic silicones in many cosmetics and personal care products like hair conditioner for one example, are causing a build up in our natural environment, poisoning waterways and ecosystems as they are not degradable. Not only do they build up on our hair skin, eventually doing damage to us. Every time we use them they slip down our drains and out into nature where they don’t belong. According to a 2021 environmental science report – approximately 4.7 tonnes of silicone from wash off products enter our surface water every year in the EU alone!

There are now some wonderful eco brands using biodegradable packaging and eliminating synthetics like silicone in their products, however they are often very expensive to buy as it’s still mostly only smaller companies doing this. Unfortunately that’s just not in everyone’s budget these days as the current cost of living continues to rise.

By learning to create your own hair and skincare products you can take control of what packaging you use, even upcycling old containers from your kitchen cupboards.

But most importantly you can take control of what ingredients go into your products and ultimately what goes onto your body and out into nature too.
